The houses
North of Spring Garden Street, the neighborhood is mostly brick and brownstone three-story townhouses built during the mid-to-late 19th century, in Italianate, Second Empire, Queen Anne and Venetian Gothic styles. Streets such as Green Street have raised front gardens.
What to know about pointing here
Spring Garden has a Philadelphia Register historic district, so masonry work there needs Historical Commission review. Brownstone trim is common; the Rowhouse Manual says deteriorated brownstone should be replaced with matching stone, not patched or stuccoed. Three-story facades mean scaffolding, which HomeGuide and Angi say adds 20–40% for work above about 8 feet.
